Virtual Faculty Development Weeks 2021

NDG has released updated lab sets across their Cybersecurity portfolio. This workshop will be designed to help instructors map these lab sets to courses and integrate those within the LMS for a more streamlined delivery. NETLAB+ has new LMS integration which has proven to decrease setup time and increase usability by both instructors and students. The presenter has used this feature for the past year in over 6 courses and
will be sharing those experiences, including describing his undergraduate and graduate Cybersecurity programs and how NETLAB+ has not only positioned the program to succeed but actually grow, even during the pandemic. One course, Digital Forensics, utilized the new NDG Forensics v2 labs which were developed by a Subject Matter Expert working in the Forensics Industry. Student responses were overwhelmingly positive as
the labs utilized up to date tools and in-depth explanations to provide an excellent learning experience.

In this hands-on workshop we will explore how to use the low-cost Raspberry Pi to teach networking (Network+) concepts. Using the Raspberry Pi and various Linux utilities we will build out all the necessary services for a functional SOHO network. Services will include DNS, DHCP, Wireless Access Point, Firewall, Ad-Blocker, File and Print services, cyber-security tools, etc. Workshop participants will gain the skills, tools, and a course plan, including lab templates, to use immediately in their courses to teach networking concepts.
Workshop is limited to 15 participants. Familiarity with the Raspberry Pi and basic Linux is helpful but not necessary for those motivated to learn.

Equipment needed for this workshop

2 Basic Raspberry Pi Kits (Raspberry Pi, Power Supply, Micro SD card, SD Card Reader), a simple 4 port network switch, 4 Ethernet cables, 2 or more extra Micro SD cards.

This course gives you the background needed to teach basic Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence. You will learn the history of Cybersecurity, types and motives of cyber attacks to further your knowledge of current threats to organizations and individuals. We will be discussing how individual attacks and attackers interact with the system and potential breach points. Individuals with existing knowledge on IT administration, IT management or software development are ideally suited to get the most out of this course. During hands-on exercises, we will aim to pair-up more seasoned participants with newer learners.

This course is broad in scope and directed towards beginners in the Cybersecurity field. Learners eager to continue their education or more seasoned participants will find courses offering a deeper dive (Network Forensics, Practical Security+) in week two and three of the event.

Data Center Virtualization: Core Technical Skills prepares the learner for a starting position in the datacenter domain and to prep for the VCTA-DCV certification. Through a series of targeted, self-paced lessons, the student acquires the skills to perform operational tasks typically assigned to the roles of operator or junior administrator. The VCTA-DCV certification holder has a basic understanding of virtualization and vSphere concepts. The certification holder also demonstrates knowledge of data center technology and basic troubleshooting concepts. A VCTA-DCV holder also has a working knowledge of managing cloud resources and basic networking concepts.

Virtual Cloud Network: Core Technical Skills prepares the learner for a starting position in the computer networking domain and to prep for the VCTA-NV certification. Through a series of targeted, self-paced lessons, the student acquires the skills to perform operational tasks typically assigned to the roles of operator or junior administrator. The VCTA-NV certification holder can identify use cases and business needs for VMware NSX platform, understand NSX terminology and perform navigation of NSX graphical user interface(s). The certification holder is also able to explain SDDC and Network Virtualization concepts, VMware Virtual Cloud Network vision, VMware NSX Architecture and NSX portfolio at a high level.

The AWS Academy Cloud Foundations workshop is for educators who seek an overall understanding of cloud computing concepts, independent of specific technical roles. It provides a detailed overview of cloud concepts, AWS core services, security, architecture, pricing, and support. This training workshop reviews the core domains of knowledge necessary to achieve the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification exam and teach the AWS Academy Cloud Foundations course.

Workshop Expectations & Objectives
In this workshop, participants will review the AWS Academy Cloud Foundations course material consisting of discussion questions, labs, reading, videos, and activities. The instructor-led workshop will dive deeper into topics and provide additional instruction and review of labs or activities. During a five-day marathon workshop, I will take you from zero to hero of data center network programmability with Cisco NX-OS. All the tools and concepts presented in this workshop will be covered without assuming any previous knowledge. Having said that, basic Python programming knowledge and basic networking concepts are welcomed but not mandatory. The tools and concepts covered in this workshop can be applied to network programmability in general and Cisco NX-OS was chosen simply to show how theoretical concepts apply to real-world network operating systems.

Cisco IOS-XE or Cisco IOS-XR could have similarly been chosen to showcase the concepts discussed in this workshop.

We will start with setting up the development environment that we will use throughout the five days and will cover in the first day the Cisco DevNet sandbox, Visual Studio Code, CML and Vagrant. Second day we will start exploring REST APIs and will have a look at Postman, Postman collections and environments as well as starting to explore Cisco NX-OS and the APIs that it provides: NX-API CLI and NX-API REST. Day three will start with Vault and how to use it to securely pass usernames, passwords and any sensitive data in our Python code. We will continue with Guestshell on Cisco NX-OS and how to use it to run Python code on the Nexus devices themselves. We will build a custom automated configuration backup solution using Python, Guestshell and https://www.github.com (a free Github account is required). We will wrap up day three with Ansible for Cisco NX-OS where we will build Ansible playbooks for network configuration automation. In day 4 we will take it to the next level and use NX-SDK to build our own custom CLI commands (both “show” and “config” commands) for Cisco NX-OS and use a popular Python library, pyDME, for automation purposes. During day five of our workshop we will cover model driven programmability in Cisco NX-OS and will explore YANG models, NETCONF and RESTCONF interfaces.

We will wrap up the workshop with CML REST API and how you can use it to automate your testing environments. Every day the afternoon session will be dedicated to office hours, discussions and troubleshooting any remaining issues still lingering from the morning sessions. As you can see the workshop content has been built in a progressive fashion starting from environment setup, basic Python scripts and Postman concepts and slowly picking up steam and introducing more advanced concepts such as NX-SDK, pyDME and model driven programmability.

This workshop provides hands-on experience on advanced topics in networking. It will focus on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS). BGP is the de facto standard inter-AS routing protocol in today’s Internet. As such, it is a critical protocol for the Internet—in essence, it is the protocol that glues the whole thing together. MPLS s a link-layer protocol that allows routers to forward packets based on fixed-length labels rather than the destination IP addresses. Today, many enterprise and ISP networks use MPLS to implement services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Segment Routing.

Hands-on Virtual Training Pods: Topics will be covered using equipment pods in a NETLAB virtual environment. Laboratory exercises are based on open-source production-grade software, namely Free-Range Routing (FRR), Linux, and standard (open) protocols. FRR is a routing protocol stack used in modern white-box switches/routers. Topics/exercises include:
• Mininet and FRR
• Introduction to BGP, external BGP, BGP authentication
• Interconnection of independent networks (autonomous systems) using BGP
• Advanced topics on BGP: local preference, MED, attacks on BGP, and Ethernet VPN (EVPN).

This workshop is a high-level introductory session to the world of Data Analytics and Tableau hands-on Training. Tableau is the widely used tool in the Data Visualization and Analytics space. This workshop provides a hands-on first look at some of the tools, techniques, and procedures used for network-based forensics and threat hunting. Attacks by basic to advanced threat actors will leave artifacts that can be detected. The malware they use must communicate somehow over the network for Command and Control (C2) and data exfiltration. We will study collecting and correlating current and historic pcap-based network data with host and network generated logs to create a profile of an attack for post-incident investigations and reporting or proactive threat hunting. Open-source tools include: Security Onion 2.0, Hunt, Kibana, Cyber Chef, Network Miner, and more.

Python is a general-purpose programming language used to build just about anything. This first part of the workshop will focus on Open vSwitch (OvS). OvS is an open-source software switch designed to be used as a virtual switch in virtualized server environments. A virtual switch forwards traffic between different virtual machines (VMs) on the same physical host and forwards traffic between VMs and the physical network. The workshop will cover the basics of OvS as well as the implementation of standard
protocols and management interface (e.g., 802.1Q, VLANs, command-line interface). It will also discuss the control of OvS using OpenFlow and the Open vSwitch Database management protocol (OVSDB).

The second part of the workshop will focus on SDN. It will review fundamental concepts of SDN, followed by lab exercises using an open-source controller and OvS switches. The workshop will provide a thorough understanding for administering SDN networks using Open Network Operating System (ONOS) controller, demonstrating the available applications supported by ONOS, and leveraging the application capabilities. Lab
exercises will integrate technologies such as OpenFlow, ONOS, OvS, Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN), BGP, and others.

Hands-on Virtual Training Pods: Attendees will have access to equipment pods in a NETLAB environment.
