Welcome to Winter/Spring 2025 Windchill Registration!!

Below is all the information you will need to successfully register for the MNRD Recreational League!

Participation Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Be female or gender expansive

  • Provide your own required gear/ safety equipment (listed below)

  • Purchase your own WFTDA supplementary insurance (details below)

  • Sign MNRD waiver and Code of Conduct

  • NO previous skating skills or knowledge are required for participation! =)

Required Gear and Safety Equipment to participate:

  • Roller skates (quads, NOT roller blades)

  • Multi-impact helmet (roller derby, hockey or skateboarding helmet, not biking)

  • Knee pads (thick, roller derby pads recommended but not required. You will fall on these a lot regardless of skill level.)

  • Elbow pads

  • Wrist guards

  • Mouth guard

  • Other optional safety equipment of hip/butt pads, shin guards, or helmet visors (but NOT cage face shields) may also be used but is not required.

  • Athletic shoes for off-skates workouts

Practice Details:

  • The Winter/Spring Term runs from January thru April

  • Practices are Sundays from 6:15-8:15 pm and split into distinct contact levels (non-contact to full contact). You are encouraged to arrive at 6pm to begin getting geared up and ready to skate at 6:15pm. Arriving just on time or late is fine. Skaters will practice in groups of those with similar skating abilities/contact level preferences.

  • Practices are also Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30pm with the entire Windchill team sharing one track and off track space as needed. These practices will be non-contact and work on doing fundamental skating and strategy building, working toward more speed and intensity. Home Team or All Star practices will be held on the other track during that time.

  • There are no attendance requirements for this program.

  • Practices are held in the Roy Wilkins Auditorium or The River Center Exhibit Halls located in downtown St Paul. If space is unavailable, no skating practice will be scheduled for that day. There may be non-skating activities scheduled instead, or the practice may be canceled. Schedules will be sent out monthly as we reserve space, and communicated again weekly to remind skaters of any changes and exact locations.

  • Skaters need to bring all their own gear, a water bottle, athletic shoes, and wear athletic clothing.

  • Water fountains and bathrooms are available. All bathrooms, regardless of signage, will be all gendered during practices.

  • These are closed practices. No guests or observers are allowed.

Typical Skating Practice Schedule:

  • (15 min prior to practice) Warm up, Gear up, free skate

  • Large group dynamic stretching on skates

  • Announcements, daily plan, questions

  • Trainer directed skating practice

  • Gear down, off skates workout, whole group stretching, cheer!

Recreational League cost:

  • $100 + processing fees (about $4) to be paid during sign up.

  • What does this money do? Roller derby has a myriad of costs associated with practice and play. Practice space, venue insurance, safety/emergency equipment and personnel, travel and bout expenses, are some of the larger costs. Small stuff like duct tape and cones to weave around add up, too. Minnesota Roller Derby is skater owned and operated. We all pay in money, time, and contribute our skills to make this awesome sport run! Fun Fact: this also comes out to less than $5 per practice, cheaper than any roller rink admission.

  • If the costs associated with any of the fees are prohibitive towards your participation, please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com BEFORE signing up and a Windchill Manager will do their best to work with you.

Additional cost:

  • WFTDA Insurance: Women's Flat Track Derby Association insurance is a secondary insurance you are required to have to participate in our recreational league program. You must have active WFTDA insurance prior to participation on skates with Minnesota Roller Derby Windchill. WFTDA insurance costs $80.00 and is active for one year from the date of purchase.

  • If possible, please purchase this prior to the first day of practice to maximize your skate time. The WFTDA website has a wonderful guide on how to do so. Here is how to find it:

  • Go to the WFTDA website https://wftda.ps.membersuite.com/

  • This is a full set of instructions on how to create an account and purchase WFTDA insurance.

  • You will need to email us ahead of time or be able to show us the confirmation email on your first practice day. You will not be able to skate until we have verified your purchase of WFTDA insurance.

  • If you would like help with this on the first day of practice, please have your card payment method available.

  • If the costs associated with any of the fees are prohibitive towards your participation, please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com BEFORE siging up and a Windchill Manager will do their best to work with you. Please do not wait to make this request on the first day of practice as we will not be able to accommodate you at that time.

Additional Illness Requirements:

  • Minnesota Roller Derby continues to take precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses at our practices and events by instating the following requirements. Please help keep everyone on your team safe and healthy!

  • Skaters cannot attend practice within 24 hours of the onset of cold-like symptoms regardless of negative COVID-19 test. If symptoms linger but are beginning to clear up, skaters may attend with a mask over their nose and mouth at all times (other than while drinking water). Trainers reserve the right to require skaters to wear a mask if they observe a skater with symptoms. It is also helpful to communicate to trainers if you know you will exhibit these symptoms due to allergies or other non-contagious health issues.

  • Skaters who have been a close contact to (spending prolonged time unmasked near) someone diagnosed with COVID-19 are required to wear a mask at practice for at least 5 days from exposure, and not attend if any symptoms emerge regardless of negative test.

  • Skaters who are diagnosed with COVID-19 need to communicate this to the Windchill Managers and our Safety Manager, Class Warfarin, for potential contact tracing purposes. They may not attend practices for at least 5 days and must mask for any practices or events within a 10 day window of the first positive test.

The timeline for registration is as follows:
