Presented by:
Julian Ernst, LICSW
Working effectively with transgender and gender non-conforming clients in psychodynamic psychotherapy requires therapists to rely on a diverse set of skills, frameworks, and self-awareness. This presentation will support the development of trans-affirming therapists by briefly introducing relevant theory, outlining aspects of anti-oppressive therapy practice, and integrating these with working from a psychodynamic perspective to help transgender and gender nonconforming clients experience an embodied, resilient, and whole self. This approach will utilize concepts of the psyche-soma, attachment, transference and countertransference, dissociation, individuation, mourning, and integration.

Julian Ernst, MSW, LICSW is a psychotherapist practicing at Northside Center for Emotional Wellness in North Minneapolis. After completing their social work degree at Simmons University in Boston, MA, Julian studied and practiced psychoanalytic psychotherapy in a two-year fellowship through Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. Julian has contributed to research at CHA regarding what patients find most helpful about psychotherapy. Julian currently works with adults, adolescents, and emerging adults.

The Minnesota Psychodynamic Clinical Social Work Association (MPCSWA) is a group of clinical social workers, including agency practitioners, private practitioners, psychoanalysts, and psychoanalytically or psychodynamically oriented psychotherapists. Membership is open to all practitioners in all mental health disciplines who share in the commitment to psychoanalytic and psychodynamic practice and research. We produce four to five Sunday Seminars every year (typically running from October - April) and a larger conference every other year. Our most recent annual conference featured Dr. Danielle Knafo, PhD in May of 2019 and was entitled "Intimacy in the Technological Age." Please email info@mpcswa.org to join our mailing list.
