The increase in incidences of youth bringing firearms to school or threatening extreme violence at school is undeniable. We are faced with a challenge of epidemic proportions. Since the Columbine tragedy more than 20 years ago, a generation of youth have grown up under the specter of school gun violence. Moreover, the most angry, despondent, and disaffected of these youth have come to believe that school violence is the solution to their pain and problems.
This is a challenge made for social workers. As clinicians, child welfare experts, researchers, policy makers, and advocates we must step up to address this issue to ensure the safety and well-being of our children and families.
