IStructE UAE and Midland Counties Regional Group Committees are inviting you to a webinar by Rudy Riachy, Head of Computational Design, Ramboll and Jesus David De Oliveira, Structural Engineer, IStructE Member, Ramboll on the topic “Design with Data - How Is Computational Design Changing Engineering Thinking and Approaches?
The speakers will emphasize on the importance of computational work in engineering. Rudy will explain Computational Design thinking, its applications, and use cases. Jesus will delve deeper into the structural computational approach, providing more technical insights. The key takeaway is to inspire engineers to embrace computational design.
What is Computational Design? Why do we need it, and is it really necessary for progress?
In this talk, we will explore computational design and its applications in structural engineering. Last year Rudy presented some case studies, and this time, we will return to the basics of computational thinking to ensure that even first-time listeners can understand its value.
Rudy will also challenge the audience to consider what the future holds for us all. After Rudy's general explanations, Jesus will delve deeper into the world of computational engineering, providing technical insights into its applications.
The purpose of this talk is to stimulate ideas, challenge norms, question our current workflows, and provoke thought about the future of the AEC industry.

Rudy Riachy – Head of Computational Design - Ramboll
An experienced architect with a robust background in applying computational design across architecture and art, Rudy has seamlessly integrated these advanced technologies into diverse creative projects over the years. Currently, as the Head of Computational Design at Ramboll, Rudy applies computational design in the realms of both design and engineering. Leading a dynamic team, Rudy works on groundbreaking projects and develops cutting-edge digital solutions and tools that drive innovation and efficiency.
In addition to his role at Ramboll, Rudy is passionate about education and sharing his expertise. He teaches in the Master’s Program in Parametric Design in Architecture (MPDA) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), guiding and inspiring students to harness the power of computational design.
With a deep enthusiasm for advancing computational design, particularly in the Middle East, Rudy founded the Computational Design Community - Middle East. He is committed to fostering innovative practices and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the industry.
Jesús David De Oliveira: Structural Engineer, Ramboll
Jesus David Oliveira, a driven structural engineer and alumni of the University of Liverpool and Imperial College London, specializes in computational design—a field he has excelled in during his tenure at Ramboll. His work spans impactful projects across London, Europe, and the Middle East, showcasing his proficiency with diverse materials such as timber, steel, concrete, and cutting-edge technologies including steel 3D printing in construction. His insights promise to enlighten audiences at IStructE on the transformative role of computational design in modern structural engineering.
